Located just a few miles west of Mackinaw City, the McGulpin Point Light was the only lighthouse we physically went into. Built in 1869, the 38' tower sits atop a lake bluff and is actually 102' above shore.
It was pretty cool going inside and seeing the living quarters. I walked up the spiral stairs of the tower and was able to go outside and walk around. It was overcast at the time, but I still got a pretty good look around the grounds. That may be why this was one of my favorite lighthouses on the trip.
We wanted to support the folks who were running the small museum, so my mom purchased the book "Ellen Jane", which was written by Frances Margaret Fox, an author of children's books who lived in the area in the early 1900's. I purchased an "Est. 1869" T-shirt with the lighthouse on it.
I also learned, that the Headlands International Dark Sky Park is nearby. It looks awesome, and I will be going back for that sometime in the near future.
