Q. What was the name of your first band?
A. Oh wow, that’s going back a ways. I believe it was Dissonant, which then became Before I Wake.
Q. What was the first song, original or cover, that band was really good at playing?
A. It was a song called “Someone's Nightmare”. We had two singers. Derek Slater and myself would switch on and off with leads. It was a real cool time to create music. Derek went on to jam with Beautiful Chaos.
Q. A lot of interview questions ask what one of your songs means, however this question flips it. What does one of your favorite songs mean to you?
A. I’m going to flip it even further and respond with what a cd means to me and that cd is “Jar of Flies” by Alice in Chains. That whole cd floods me with memories of being a kid with no worries and all the time in the world to live. It was the first time that music did that to me. Really rocked my soul to the core. Still gives me chills to this day every time I hear it.
Q. What’s one of your favorite lyrics in a song?
A. Way too many, lol. I’ll go back a few years to a song called “Evolve”, chorus goes like this. “I know my heart, my mind, my soul, my life is broken. No one is listening to me when i’m crying out. Think of the good times that you had that make you happy. The waiting is over.”
Q. What’s one of your favorite quotes from a movie?
A. I am a movie buff man. All the time I quote things. This is a really hard one to answer. I’ll give you a movie and a tv quote. First, “Office Space” when the counselor dude has the heart attack. He’s counting down from ten. I love the, “Way, way down. One.”, then he hits the floor. Next, “King of the Hill”. I’m a big fan of Dale and I catch myself always going, “Shhhiiii Shhaa”.
Q. Other than spending time with your family or on your music, what do like to do with your spare time?
A. I am an adrenalin junky, so I became a firefighter. Lol. There’s just nothing quite like it. Every call is different. It’s a rush. I love my community and it gives me a chance to give back to the town I’ve lived in for thirty years. It’s become part of me.
Q. Ok, let's finish rapid fire style. What is your favorite song by?
“Thunderstruck” …i mean duh, lol.
“Jump in the Fire”
Alice In Chains
“I Stay Away”
Rage Against The Machine
